Personal Loan Comparison in India: APR, EMI and Fees Explained

A lower EMI can look attractive while hiding a longer and more expensive repayment schedule. Before choosing a personal loan in India, compare the amount you receive, the full repayment cost and the lender’s final terms together.

APR, interest rate and EMI: what is the difference?

The interest rate describes the interest charged under the loan agreement. The annual percentage rate, or APR, is a broader measure of annualised borrowing cost. EMI is the periodic repayment amount. These figures answer different questions: a manageable EMI does not, by itself, prove that a loan costs less.

Ask for the Key Facts Statement (KFS) before committing. RBI describes the KFS as a standardised way to explain key loan terms and all-in cost. Read the personalised document rather than relying on a promotional “starting from” rate.

A practical loan comparison checklist

  1. Net disbursal: How much reaches your bank account after any deducted charges?
  2. APR and fees: Compare the final APR, processing charges, applicable taxes and any additional paid services.
  3. Repayment: Check the number of instalments, each due date and total scheduled repayment.
  4. Missed payments: Read the late-payment and other penalty terms before accepting.
  5. Early closure: Check whether prepayment is allowed and what conditions or charges apply.
  6. Provider identity: Confirm which lender issues the loan, where repayments go and how to contact its grievance team.

Why the smallest EMI may not be the cheapest option

Here is a simple illustration, not a lender quote: 12 instalments of ₹9,000 total ₹108,000, while 24 instalments of ₹5,000 total ₹120,000. The second monthly instalment is smaller, but the total instalments are ₹12,000 higher. Processing charges and other costs still need to be checked separately; this example does not calculate APR.

Credit card or personal loan?

Compare the specific card purchase or EMI terms against the personalised loan offer for the same need and amount. Reward headlines do not replace a repayment plan. Decide whether you need to borrow at all, and check whether instalments remain affordable alongside existing commitments.

Quick answers

Does meeting the advertised eligibility guarantee approval?

No. The lender assesses the application and determines whether to approve it and on what terms.

Should I compare only the starting interest rate?

No. Compare the personalised APR, fees, net disbursal and repayment schedule together.

Can a visitor outside India use these offers?

The current loan campaign is India-specific. A country selection does not override lender eligibility.
