Quick answer: CASHBACK SBI is worth examining for eligible online purchases spread across merchants. Flipkart Axis deserves a closer look when Flipkart, Myntra or Cleartrip already form a large part of your normal spending. Neither is automatically the better card: caps, exclusions and fees change the result.
The current terms that matter
| Parameter | CASHBACK SBI Card | Flipkart Axis Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible online rewards | 5% on eligible online spending | 5% on Flipkart and Cleartrip; 7.5% on Myntra |
| Main cap | ₹2,000 online cashback per statement cycle; separate ₹2,000 offline cap | ₹4,000 per statement quarter for each of Flipkart, Cleartrip and Myntra |
| Other eligible spending | 1% offline | 1% other eligible categories; 4% at preferred merchants |
| Standard renewal fee | ₹999 plus applicable taxes | ₹500 plus applicable taxes from year two |
| Renewal waiver | ₹2 lakh eligible annual spend | Eligible annual spend greater than ₹3.5 lakh |
| Application checks | Issuer credit assessment and exact offer | Issuer credit assessment and exact offer; limited-period joining-fee waiver is not lifetime-free |
SBI currently shows a ₹4,000 combined cycle maximum across its separate online and offline buckets. Axis measures its main merchant limits quarterly. Those are different clocks: a quarterly cap is not a monthly allowance. Refunds and excluded transactions can reduce earned rewards. Read the linked issuer terms rather than assuming every online payment qualifies.
A spending pattern is more useful than a winner label
Start with three months of transactions. Separate ordinary eligible online shopping from fuel, rent, wallets, EMI purchases and other excluded categories. Then group the remaining shopping by merchant. This avoids choosing a card around an unusually large sale purchase that will not recur.
Illustration: suppose ₹10,000 a month of spending is eligible for a 5% reward, every month, and stays within every relevant cap. Gross annual cashback is ₹6,000. If the renewal fee is ₹999 plus an assumed 18% GST, subtract ₹1,178.82, leaving ₹4,821.18 before other costs. With a ₹500 fee plus the same tax assumption, the remaining amount is ₹5,410. These are arithmetic examples, not a guarantee that either card will reward the same basket.
When the merchant mix changes
If most purchases move to unrelated websites, the Flipkart-specific rate does not follow them. If one large online purchase uses up the SBI online bucket, smaller purchases later in the same statement cycle may add little cashback. A family buying a laptop once and a household buying groceries every week can therefore reach different conclusions even with the same annual spend.
- Use eligible spending after refunds when modelling rewards.
- Do not spend extra merely to reach an annual-fee waiver.
- Check whether an instant sale discount excludes the chosen cashback card.
- Treat joining bonuses separately from the value in year two.
- Repay the full statement balance on time; borrowing charges can overwhelm rewards.
Questions answered
Can I add an instant discount and cashback together?
Only when both sets of terms allow the combination. A sale banner, ordinary cashback schedule and EMI promotion are separate offers.
Which card is cheaper for occasional shopping?
Compare your eligible annual rewards after the applicable fee. A smaller renewal fee can matter more than a high headline reward when spending is low.
Is the listed joining waiver permanent?
No. A limited-period or first-year joining waiver does not establish that future renewal fees are waived.
