Quick answer: Your normal fuel outlet should drive the shortlist. BPCL-specific rewards are useful when you regularly use eligible BPCL outlets; IndianOil-specific rewards fit eligible IndianOil spending. A detour or additional purchase can erase the apparent advantage.
Separate rewards from surcharge relief
| Parameter | BPCL SBI Card | IndianOil Axis Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Published fuel proposition | 3.25% reward value plus eligible 1% surcharge waiver in the advertised 4.25% package | 4% reward value on eligible IndianOil fuel spending |
| Network relevance | Eligible BPCL transactions | Eligible IndianOil transactions |
| What to verify | POS eligibility, monthly point cap, transaction band and waiver cap | Eligible transaction bands, monthly cap and waiver terms |
| Variant warning | Regular BPCL is not BPCL Octane | Regular IndianOil is not IndianOil Premium |
| Common limitation | Points must be usable to have value | Points must be usable to have value |
SBI’s regular BPCL proposition specifies qualifying POS transactions up to ₹4,000, exclusive of GST and other charges. Axis describes 20 points per ₹100 at eligible IndianOil outlets. These headline figures are not a universal discount on every fuel transaction. The exact merchant, transaction size and current terms matter.
Use actual receipts
Take the last six fuel receipts. Record the pump brand, typical transaction amount and whether you paid at the outlet or through a separate application. Multiply only qualifying amounts by the applicable rewards rate. Then apply each cap in the relevant statement cycle. Keep surcharge reimbursement as a separate line rather than adding it twice.
Illustration: normal fuel spending is ₹4,000 monthly and a hypothetical scheme gives 3% usable rewards without a cap binding. Gross annual value is ₹1,440. A hypothetical ₹500 renewal fee with assumed 18% tax leaves ₹850. If you pay an extra ₹100 a month to use a more expensive or inconvenient outlet, the card has no positive net value in this example. Pump prices, caps and reward usability must be modelled from your own situation.
Fuel rewards versus a general card
A general shopping card may exclude fuel rewards while offering a limited surcharge waiver. That can still be reasonable for occasional drivers who do not want another fee-bearing card. Frequent drivers should compare the additional reward after the second card’s cost and the effort of redemption. Do not assume the largest percentage wins when one card’s monthly cap is quickly exhausted.
- Confirm outlet eligibility before your first fuel transaction.
- Check whether GST on the surcharge is reimbursed.
- Count only the reward value you can redeem.
- Review points expiry and any redemption charges.
- Pay the full card bill; fuel savings do not justify expensive revolving debt.
Questions answered
Is a surcharge waiver the same as cashback?
No. A waiver addresses a separate charge; reward points or cashback are another benefit. Each has its own conditions.
Should I split a fill-up into several transactions?
Do not assume this will improve rewards. Per-cycle caps and transaction rules still apply; follow the issuer’s terms.
Does the same brand guarantee reward eligibility?
Not by itself. The payment channel and merchant identification can matter, so verify the current qualifying conditions.
