Cashback vs Travel Credit Cards: Compare Usable Value After Fees

India · Finance guide · Updated 9 October 2026

Quick answer: Cashback is easier to value when credited in money. Travel rewards can be useful when you regularly redeem them for trips you already plan. Compare the net result with the cash price of the same trip, and do not assign a full retail value to perks you would not buy.

Use the same annual spending amount for both cards, and avoid valuing the same purchase twice. If a travel booking already earns points, a linked voucher should not be counted as a separate guaranteed saving unless it applies to the same booking and can genuinely be used.

An original value example

Imagine a cashback card returns ₹4,800 annually after caps, with ₹1,180 total annual fees and taxes. Net value is ₹3,620. A hypothetical travel card earns 12,000 points. At a redemption you can actually obtain of ₹0.30 per point, their value is ₹3,600. Add ₹800 of airport benefits you otherwise would have purchased and subtract ₹2,360 of fees: net value is ₹2,040. The cashback option wins this particular example. If redemption value changes to ₹0.50, the result changes. These are hypothetical assumptions, not benefits attributed to a listed issuer.

Do not let the lounge decide everything

List the airport, terminal, domestic or international status, guest requirements and access conditions for your usual trips. An unused visit is not a saving. A visit that requires spending above your ordinary budget can be expensive. The correct question is whether the benefit lowers the cost of your existing travel, rather than whether it looks premium.

For international transactions, compare the merchant’s foreign-currency price with any offered INR conversion. Zero forex markup does not guarantee the cheapest exchange outcome, and merchant conversion can be a separate cost. Check the provider terms for ATM cash withdrawals too; a travel card should not be assumed to make every type of overseas transaction free.

Keep the shortlist manageable

  • Model the next twelve months rather than an unusually busy travel year.
  • Use conservative redemption values and apply availability limits.
  • Record points that may expire before your next trip.
  • Exclude welcome benefits when evaluating renewal.
  • Compare two or three suitable cards on the dashboard before applying.

Questions answered

Are travel points equal to cash?

Not necessarily. Their value depends on the redemption route, availability and any costs associated with using them.

Is a travel card useful if I travel once a year?

It may be, but a fee and unused perks can reduce its value. A low-cost general card may be a simpler alternative.

Should I apply immediately before a trip?

Allow time for assessment, issuance and activation. Do not make non-refundable plans based on an unapproved card.
